About the artist
Flá Traballe is a fine artist currently living in Denver, Colorado. She was born and raised in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. After graduating college with a degree in Translation and Interpretation, she was introduced to her very first artistic endeavor in hand weaving. She moved to the US in 1992 and went back to school where she graduated in Industrial Design at Metropolitan State University of Denver.
Paper embroidery is the result of extensive experimentation with a variety of mediums. From woodworking to calligraphy, Flá’s interest in natural textures and her Brazilian heritage of fine crafters all have served in forming the basis of her artistic practice today.
Always striving to achieve simplicity and playfulness with light and delicacy, Flá embroiders on artisanal papers from around the globe with the finest threads and delicate 23K gold gilding.
Artist Statement
Colors, patterns and textures found in nature have always been the most significant sources of inspiration in my art practice. The delicate and complex shapes of leaves and flowers, the intricate textures of tree trunks, the brightness and density of a tropical rain forest with its many sounds and scents are key reference points when selecting materials for the work that I make. Each piece is manually stitched with the finest vintage and contemporary threads and gilded in 24K gold on a variety of hand crafted papers from different parts of the world.
